Waterproofing spans a very wide price range because it spans a very wide set of solutions — from regrading a flowerbed for the cost of an afternoon to excavating a wall to footing depth. Working from cheapest plausible cause upward saves most homeowners a great deal of money.
Start with the cheapest plausible cause
None of this is glamorous, and none of it carries a warranty a salesperson can sell you. It is still the correct order, and a contractor who walks the exterior before proposing an interior system is showing you how they think.
- 1Extend downspouts well clear of the foundation and confirm they actually discharge downhill.
- 2Correct negative grading so the first several feet of soil fall away from the wall.
- 3Clear and cover window wells, and confirm their drains are not blocked.
- 4Check for irrigation heads and hoses soaking the foundation.
- 5Only then consider drainage systems inside or outside the wall.
Interior drain tile pricing
Interior systems are priced per linear foot of perimeter, plus the sump basin, pump and discharge. Cost rises with slab thickness, obstructions, finished walls that must come out, and whether a second pump or battery backup is specified.
An interior system manages water that reaches the wall. It does not stop water arriving, which is why it pairs with exterior correction rather than replacing it.
Exterior waterproofing pricing
Exterior work is priced by the length and depth of excavation. It is the more thorough approach — the wall is cleaned, membrane applied, and footing drainage installed or replaced — and it is meaningfully more expensive because of the excavation, spoil, restoration and the obstacles typically sitting against the house.

Seasonal seepage at one corner after heavy rain, in a house with downspouts discharging two feet from the wall, is usually a grading and gutter problem. A whole-perimeter interior system will also fix it — expensively.
Ask any contractor proposing a full system what they found on the exterior that rules the cheap fixes out.

- What restoration is included after the slab or finishes are opened?

Frozen ground cannot absorb meltwater, so a rapid spring thaw over saturated clay sends water sideways along the surface toward the lowest point — frequently a foundation wall. A basement that stays dry all summer can flood in March for exactly this reason.

Is interior or exterior waterproofing better value?
Interior systems cost less and manage water that arrives. Exterior work costs more and reduces water arriving at all. The right answer depends on where the water is coming from, which is what the exterior assessment establishes.
Does a sump pump alone fix a wet basement?
Only if water is already reaching a place the pump can collect it. A pump with no drainage path to feed it does very little.
Will waterproofing fix a bowing wall?
No. Water pressure may be what bowed the wall, so relieving it matters, but the wall itself needs structural attention separately.
