Helical Pier Cost: What Sits Behind the Per-Pier Price
Helical piers are quoted per pier, which makes two bids look comparable when they often are not. The difference lives in the shaft size, the helix configuration, the verified torque, the assumed depth and what happens when the installer needs to go deeper.
What the per-pier number should include
- Shaft size and material specification, and the helix plate configuration.
- The design load per pier and the torque that will be used to verify it.
- A stated base depth, with the per-foot rate beyond it.
- The bracket type and how load is transferred to the footing.
- Whether lift is being attempted or the goal is stabilisation only.
Stabilise or lift?
Stabilising stops further settlement. Lifting attempts to return the structure toward its original elevation, and it carries real risk — attached finishes, plumbing and masonry can crack as the building moves back. Lift attempts cost more and require a clear conversation about the acceptable outcome before work begins.
A quote should say plainly which one it is buying you.
Access is a real line item
Interior installations mean breaking and reinstating slab, moving the equipment through the house and managing dust. Exterior installations mean excavation, spoil and landscaping restoration. Neither is automatically cheaper; it depends on the house.

Why does the pier count differ between contractors?
Because pier layout follows a load path judgement. Different assessments of where the settlement is and what carries the load produce different counts. That difference is a diagnosis disagreement, not a pricing one.
Are helical piers better than push piers?
Neither is universally better. Helical piers suit lighter structures and verify capacity by torque as they install; push piers use the building's weight as reaction and suit heavier structures. Soil and structure decide.
Do piers stop the house from ever moving again?
They transfer load to competent soil below the active zone, which addresses settlement. They do not address heave, drainage or wall bowing, so a pier-only scope can leave a real cause untouched.
