Where push piers are the wrong choice

The limitation is structure weight. A single-storey frame house, a porch, a stoop, a deck or a light addition often cannot provide the reaction needed. Pushing against them lifts them instead of advancing the pier, and the result is a pier that never reaches capacity.

In those cases helical piers, which get their force from a machine rather than from the building, are the correct method. A contractor who proposes push piers under a light porch is either not thinking about reaction or is proposing to install piers that will not verify.

Push piers are also not the answer for lateral problems. A bowing basement wall needs restraint, not vertical support.
