A tight vertical crack in a poured wall that has never leaked and has not changed in years is very often left alone. Filling it does no harm, but it is not urgent structural work and should not be sold as such.

Hairline cracks in a basement slab are extremely common and usually reflect normal shrinkage. They matter when they are offset vertically, when the slab is visibly out of level, or when they are the entry point for water — not simply because they exist.

How do I know if a crack is getting wider?
