When water still reaches the crawl space after exterior measures are addressed, interior drainage intercepts it before it spreads across the floor. A drain line installed along the interior perimeter, typically at the base of the wall, collects water and channels it to a collection point.
That collection point is usually a sump pump, sized to move the water that reaches it out and away from the foundation. A pump that lacks capacity or backup power defeats the purpose of the drainage system it's attached to, since the water it collects has nowhere else to go once it arrives.
Discharge routing
Where the sump discharges matters as much as the pump itself. Discharge that dumps water right back near the foundation, or into a spot that re-saturates the same soil, can reintroduce the same water the system was built to remove. Routing discharge well away from the foundation, and checking that the discharge line stays clear and functional, is part of a complete drainage design rather than an afterthought.
Why sealing before draining fails
A vapor barrier or encapsulation liner is designed to keep moisture from entering the crawl space air — not to hold back standing water. If a crawl space still receives water and it gets sealed anyway, that water collects underneath or against the liner with no way to drain out and no way to evaporate through it either. The result is often worse than an unsealed crawl space: hidden, trapped moisture against the wood framing and foundation.
This is the reason drainage has to be assessed and, if needed, installed before encapsulation, rather than treated as an optional add-on afterward.
Getting the sequence right for your house
Because the right combination of grading, downspout extensions, interior drainage and a sump depends on where the water is actually coming from, the sequence should follow an inspection that traces water back to its source rather than starting with whichever fix seems most obvious.
